NORTHERN WISCONSIN VOLKSWAGEN
CLUB'S
FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
JUNE 22, 2001
We had a great time Friday night talking and celebrating our club's first year anniversary with everyone. It was a perfect evening, weather wise, for our celebration, as well. Some of the members showed up at the Starlite Diner early to eat or enjoy some ice cream. The Starlite Diner was happy to accommodate our meeting again this year. Between 6 and 7, the Dubs began to roll in. Members enjoyed talking and looking at each others VWs.
The Wiegmanns brought their Thing. Brent Freeman's friend Randy, who has become a member, brought his beautiful 65 convertible and we couldn't help but gawk over it. Tracey Buttles brought his beautifully restored 74 light blue bug. Our most famous club member, Kathy Amenson, brought her 76 Vert that was recently the subject of a photo shoot and Kathy was in the shoot, too! Troy Schultz brought his awesome 64 Sundial camper bus. Billy and Julia brought one of their many buses (Billy is going to have to give me a lesson on telling years of buses). These are just a few of the folks that were there. The Rorrers shared their stories and pictures of their recent trip to Arizona where the VWs are plentiful and don't have as much rust. We had about 20 VWs before the cruise at the Diner. A new list of members was distributed, so if you didn't get one and would like one let me know. We have 90 members, now.
A special presentation began at 6:50 pm. I thanked everyone for their help with the club and for being a part of our club. Without all of you the club would not exist. That goes for you folks that weren't there, too. I announced that if anyone would like to help with our August show and you haven't let me know already then please notify me so I can start getting a schedule together and set up a meeting before the show. I announced that several members have become honorary members of our club. These members have helped the club over the past year in various ways. Some helped with our first VW Show in Appleton, some helped by hosting/planning club events, and some have been participating in our events since day one.
The following members received an honorary nametag with their name, the club name, and the VW logo (use was approved by VWoA). A VW fanatic I met in Michigan made the nametags for me and they are a very nice pin on engraved plastic nametags. Here are our honorary members for this past year: Jim Bremer, Brent Freeman, David & Jean Haefs, Dale & Gail Hallen, John Moore, Howard Rorrer, Sr. & Joyce Rorrer, Keith & Jenny Wiegmann, and Brian & Amy Zuhse. I will be mailing Dale & Gail's and David & Jean's nametags. Jenny presented me with a huge "Thank You" card and a little something to help with my upcoming restoration of the 65 Bug. Howard presented me with a very unique Bug clock. Thank you, guys. You know you didn't have to, though.
Immediately after our presentation, most of us started to assemble for the cruise through College Ave. We divided up into 2 groups. One half went straight down College Ave, while the others went down Washington Street and then around to College Ave. We tried to time it so that we would be cruising down College Ave in opposite lanes. We had a fun time and there happen to be a wedding going on at that time, so the wedding party was saying their congrats as we were cruising by.
After the cruise we gathered in a church parking lot to regroup before heading to Waverly Beach, a sports bar with a great Friday fish fry. We made our way across the Fox River via the Oneida Skyline Bridge and down to Waverly Beach, which is on the North shore of beautiful Lake Winnebago. The Waverly Beach folks were very accommodating to us and the food was excellent. I will be sending them a thank you card for the club. We had a couple trivia questions for door prizes while we waited for our food. It was a great time, great folks, and great food. Thank you to everyone for helping the NWVC celebrate our first year anniversary. Hope to have many more years of fun. We can't do it without you.

These pictures were taken after the downtown Appleton cruise while waiting to caravan to Waverly Beach. If anyone has any other pictures from June 22nd, please let me know. I wasn't very good at my usual shutterbugging that evening.
