October, 13/14, 2001 - NWVC Fall Cruise/Campout - Sister Bay, WI

The Door County Cruise, Sister Bay Fall Fest, and Campout was a great
time. The weather cooperated (overcast) for most of Saturday. Late afternoon
we did get a rain shower and it continued on through the night but we were
prepared for it. Nick had brought his side tent for The Brown Hornet and we
had our own little lounge area complete with heat and lights. It added to
the VWness of the weekend.

We had three ’74 Beetles show up for the cruise on Saturday morning in
Appleton. My son followed behind us as a back up vehicle since he was the
only non-VW. I brought Hubert the Sun Bug, Kevin K. brought Jr., and Thad
and Mary Farquhar brought Buttercup. We had a great time cruising and made
great time. The leaves in Door County were definitely at their peak. Getting
to the Fall Fest early was definitely a lot better than coming after the
parade like we did last year. Dale had a spot reserved for us at the marina
for the Classic Auto Show and it couldn’t have been easier access.

We had 6 VWs entered in the show from our club including Dale’s beautiful
Cal Bug. A few of the others came up on Friday night to camp including Nick.
Nick caught a ride with one of the DBG members that was camping. He had the
honor of being the only Bus and Vanagon that was in the show. You see the
whole idea of a side tent is that you can detach it from the bus and drive
away without breaking down camp. At least that works when you don’t park in
front of a tree! How Nick managed to do that I have no idea and I don’t
think he remembers, either. Dan and Lisa Herr from the Sheboygan VW Club
joined us for camping, too. Scott from the Sheboygan VW Club joined us later
in the parade and stayed at The Birchwood Lodge, which I heard was very
nice. There was a small contingency of Sheboygan people who stayed at The
Birchwood Lodge. Thad and Mary liked the place so much they booked a weekend
in December to come back. You'll understand why in a moment.

The Classic Car Show put on by the Lion’s Club is a fantastic show for car
enthusiasts. They have some great cars that you don’t get to see very often
at other car shows. Some fine examples of antique cars that look as good as
the day they were made. There was a 1960s Porsche, a Gullwing, Mercedes Benz
Limo, Shelby Cobra, and even a couple HumVees. This show just gets better
every year. There was one other VW that was not with our group and it was a
beautiful Vert that the owner had recently bought.

The parade was a lot of fun. Imagine 7 Beetles in a line coasting down hill
through downtown with lots of kids. If you have visions of Slug Bug, you got
it right! We did have a smart aleck kid who thought my open sunroof was an
invite to throw candy into the car. I got a couple green apple jolly
ranchers out of the ordeal at least. At the end of parade route was the
marina so we just zipped right back into our parking slots and we were free
for the rest of the afternoon to hang out or check out the festivities.

Nick and I went to check out our favorite hat place, Hat Head. If you’ve
ever seen Nick’s cow hat, this is the place it came from. They have the most
unusual hats I have ever seen. I found a hat for Halloween so I can’t let
you know about it just yet, but it is a good one. Last year, Nick hit all of
the beer booths so this year he decided to hit all of the food booths since
he had his beer and brat for breakfast already. The food was delicious at
every booth we stopped at. The afternoon was overcast and around 3 pm we saw
the clouds rolling in for the rain. We decided that the rain shower was
going to pretty much end the festivities so we headed back to the campground
in Baileys Harbor. Well sort of anyway.

We ended up taking a detour and getting mixed up on what direction we were
going so we ended up going north instead of south and did a little circle
tour of the tip of Door County. It was a steady rain so it wasn’t so bad.
When we figured out which way we were going and got ourselves turned back
around we ran into Chris and his Vanagon. Apparently, he had done the same
thing. We all had a good laugh back at the campground. That night we hung
out in the side tent while the others who stayed at The Birchwood Lodge were
enjoying Jacuzzis and fireplaces in their rooms. Hmmm... Doesn’t sound too
bad does it? If you could park your bus in them, then I might be tempted to
stay in the place.

It rained steadily all night but did slow down a bit. The next morning we
awoke to a beautiful sunny but chilly morning. We packed up and carefully
drained the water from everything before chucking it all in the bus. Nick
had to dry the bus out for a couple days after we got back. We set the tent
up in the pole shed for a couple days too. We went to breakfast in Baileys
Harbor at the Florian II. It is right on Lake Michigan and the tables are
set up in a sun porch that is just great. The view can’t be beat. Their
breakfast buffet is a good deal for $6.95 and has something for all types of
appetites. Give the place a try if you’re ever in Door County. The folks
staying at The Birchwood Lodge and Dale and Gail Hallen joined us for
breakfast. We had a great time meeting everyone and decided we would like to
come back again next year with more club members.

On the way back, we caravanned to the Door Pennisula Winery to do a little
free wine tasting. Just before we reached the winery I noticed the back of
the caravan lagging behind but still driving so we kept going. When we got
to the winery, Kevin informed us that Jr.’s clutch was starting to slip on
the last hill. We went into the winery first and figured we would look at
the Jr.’s clutch after we had a few libations. The winery has started making
Champaign and it was very good not to mention their fall favorite of mine,
Hallowine. It’s the wine that taste like an apple pie with ice cream. Yum!
It’s even better when it’s warm! I ended up buying several bottles of wine.
Who could resist?

Well, there wasn’t much we could do for Jr. besides tearing the clutch out
and replacing.  The pedal was good and the cable adjustment was good so we
decided to have Kevin drive Jr. between the 2 buses and use them as a
windbreak. We were hoping this would help enough to get Kevin home before
his clutch went out totally. As a back up plan if the clutch got really bad,
Kevin was going to pull over and we would use our AAA plan to get Jr. towed
home. The windbreak idea worked well and Kevin drove Jr. back home to Black
Creek.

I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this a fun weekend. Especially
those who joined us from the Sheboygan VW Club, the DBG, and the NWVC Club
members who came along and had a great time. A big thank you to Dale Hallen
who helped with the pre-planning and taking care of making sure we had a
place in the Classic Car Show. Dale, please pass along the club’s thank you
to the Lion’s Club for allowing us to join in the show.

Get those Dubs out and drive them before the snow flies!
