The Door County Campout and Sister Bay Fall Fest was a great time. The weather worked out perfectly this year. Friday, we had some rain but Saturday turned out to be fantastic. Sunday was sunny, too. No running from the rain this year. The temperatures were bearable, too. Daytime temps in the 60s. No side lounge tent needed this year!

The Saturday morning cruise was canceled this year due to lack of interest. I was able to go up to Door County on Friday, because of this. It started to sprinkle when Hubert (74 Sunbug) and I left the driveway. In Green Bay, we hit snow! I thought to myself, I hope this isn't a sign. By the time we got across the Bay and into Door County, it was a steady rain. Good thing I had Rain X'd the windshield before I left. The leaves in Door County were definitely at their peak and beautiful despite the rain. I pulled into Baileys Bluff Campground around the same time Crusty did with his 63 Westy (Winnefred). Nick was lounging beside the fire with his favorite libation. He had made the trip to Door County earlier in the week.

That afternoon and evening more buses showed up. It was definitely shaping up to be a Bus event. There were a few NWVC members who came in their buses, too. We had a fun evening around the campfire. Nick had enough wood for the weekend and if he hadn't gotten drunk the night before we would have had some left over. I guess he was having quite a fire on Thursday evening from what the campground owners told me. We ended up with 13 buses, 1 Beetle, and dare I say . . . 1 Kia (Karmann). We had a little problem with the campground's electrical wiring. It appears that they can't handle several space heaters running all at once. I did call ahead to tell them how many to expect but apparently they weren't prepared for this.

The next morning we went to Sister Bay's Fall Fest. Dale had a spot reserved for us at the marina for the Classic Auto Show and it couldn’t have been easier access. We made quite a showing with all of the buses. Dale brought his beautiful Ghia. Todd Danielson brought his Beetle, too. They kept Hubert company. There were people looking at our VWs all day long. They loved the buses.

The Classic Car Show put on by the Lion’s Club is a fantastic show for car enthusiasts. They have some great cars that you don’t get to see very often at other car shows. Some fine examples of antique cars that look as good as the day they were made. There was a Gullwing, Shelby Cobra, and even a HumVee. This show just gets better every year. There was one other VW that was not with our group and it was a beautiful blue Beetle that was for sale.

After Nick (I drove in with one group and Nick drove in with the other group of buses) were parked in the marina, we enjoyed the Pancake Breakfast in the Community Building. Then we commenced to walk the main street and enjoy the food and beer stands. There was a huge craft show that looked to be very popular, as well. Bloody Marys were in order for an after breakfast cocktail. Of course, we had to check out our favorite hat place, Hat Head. If you’ve ever seen Nick’s cow hat, this is the place it came from. They have the most unusual hats I have ever seen. Hat Head is a must visit if you are ever in Sister Bay.

After the parade, we decided to head back towards Baileys Bluff. When you leave Sister Bay they detour you around the town because the main road is shut off for the Fall Fest. Last year we ended up getting lost and doing the tour around the tip of Door county. This year, Nick tried to get us lost again but I didn't follow Nick when he took a wrong turn. I pulled over to the side of the road and waited for him to come back. About 10 minutes later, he came back to the intersection after he realized I wasn't behind him anymore. It's always an adventure!!

That night we had a nice campfire and had a great time. The VW tales were in full force. Some of us probably had too much to drink and impaired our good judgement. The electrical problems were not any better this night, either.

We went to breakfast in Baileys Harbor at the Florian II the next morning. It is right on Lake Michigan. The view can’t be beat. Their breakfast buffet is a good deal for $6.95 and has something for all types of appetites. Give the place a try if you’re ever in Door County.

On the way back, we caravanned to the Door Pennisula Winery to do a little
free wine tasting. The winery has won many awards for their wines. Of course, they had their Fall favorite available, Hallowine. It’s the wine that taste like an apple pie with ice cream. Yum! It’s even better when it’s warm! I ended up buying several bottles of wine.
Who could resist? After the winery, we all caravaned for a bit until we went our separate directions.

I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this a fun weekend. Especially
those who joined us from the DBG, and the NWVC Club members who came along and had a great time. A big thank you to Dale Hallen who helped with the pre-planning and taking care of making sure we had a place in the Classic Car Show. Dale, please pass along the club’s thank you to the Lion’s Club for allowing us to join in the show. We plan on adding more excitement to this event  next year, so mark you calendars.
